It is the biennial, international conference sponsored and organized by the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. (HGA), and hosted by a committee of dedicated fiber enthusiasts. Convergence features special lectures, workshops and seminars, exhibits, tours, special events, and a commercial vendors hall full of fibers, fiber-related equipment and an artist market. HGA's Convergence 2010 will be held July18-25.

A one-day workshop with Cheryl Roberts hosted by the Florence Thomas Art School in Glendale Springs, NC. Students will learn history, transfering patterns, dying, hooking techniques, and finishing. Beginners will start with something small, choosing their own colors, and more advanced students may do a larger rug. Everyone one will go home with some wool that they have learned to dye. ATB8 is an international juried exhibit organized by the non-profit American Tapestry Alliance. The exhibit will open at Elder Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska during the meetings of the Textile Society of America. Contemporary tapestry will be at the forefront at these meetings. Paradise Found Farm is home to the annual Whidbey Island Fabulous Fall Fiber Sale (WIFFFS). During the sale (which takes place rain or shine), fiber producers from the Northwest offer fiber in fleece, roving, and handspun yarn from locally raised llamas, alpacas, goats, sheep, and other animals. They also offer quality handfelted, handwoven, and knitted garments;, hats, scarves, shawls, and gloves in dyed and natural colors;, Japanese kumihimo braiding; books, supplies, and class information. Throughout the day, there are demonstrations to watch, critters to visit, a reception tent to enjoy, and more., The 2010 sale will take place on Saturday, September 18 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 4081 Springwater Lane, Clinton, WA 98236. NICHE magazine will be accepting applications for the 2011 NICHE Awards competition starting May 15, 2010, The deadline for student entries is Sept.30, 2010. Applications can be filed online. Finalists are invited to display their work in the NICHE Awards exhibit at the Winter Buyers Market of American Craft in Philadelphia, Feb. 18-21, 2011. Winners will be announced at a special ceremony during the Buyers Market and featured in the Spring 2011 issue of NICHE.

Textile Learning Center at the Mission Mill

Mission Mill Museum preserves Mission houses, an Oregon Trail settler's house, a historic church and the structures, equipment, and original water-powered turbine of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill with related artifacts. The classes available through our Textile Learning Center offer something for everyone, from the merely curious to the advanced fiber artist. Open Studio provides students and weavers with an opportunity to use the Textile Learning Center Studio. Studio use includes various multiple harness looms, a surface design printing table, textile tools and a resource library. Plan a project, try out different equipment, or simply enjoy the company of fellow textile artists. A basic knowledge of the equipment you intend to use (i.e. the ability to thread a loom) is required. Formal instruction and project materials are not included.
